How to Choose the Right Light

A simple guide to brightness, colour temperature, size, and placement.

Brightness & colour temperature

01 · Brightness

Start with the lumens.

Lumens measure brightness. Wattage measures energy use.

  • Bedroom100–200 lumens per m²
  • Living room100–200 lumens per m²
  • Dining room150–300 lumens per m²
  • Kitchen300–500 lumens per m²

Layer ambient, task, and accent lighting for a more comfortable room.

02 · Colour temperature

Choose the mood.

  • Living room2700–3000K
  • Dining room2700–3000K
  • Bedroom2700–3000K
  • Kitchen3000–4000K
  • Bathroom3000–4000K
  • Home office3500–4500K
  1. 2700KWarm
  2. 3000KSoft white
  3. 4000KNeutral
  4. 5000KDaylight

Size & placement

03 · Size

Choose the right scale.

Above a dining table:Choose a pendant approximately one-half to two-thirds the width of the table.

For a balanced look:Leave enough visual space around the fixture and consider the size and height of the room.

04 · Placement

Hang it at the right height.

Above a dining table:Approximately 75–90 cm above the tabletop.

Beside a bed:Position the light where it is comfortable for reading without shining directly into your eyes.

In an open room:Use several light sources instead of relying on one central fixture.

Material & compatibility

05 · Material

Consider how the material shapes the light.

Glass:Clear and bright, with an open light effect.

Fabric:Soft and diffused for a warmer atmosphere.

Metal:More directional, ideal for focused lighting.

Natural materials:Textured and decorative, often producing a softer glow.

06 · Before you buy

Check the details.

Confirm:

  • Fixture dimensions
  • Bulb base and maximum wattage
  • Dimmable compatibility
  • Voltage compatibility
  • Installation requirements
  • IP rating for bathrooms or outdoor areas

Product specifications vary. Always review the individual product details before purchasing.
